Program Description
In order to develop an outstanding pool of professionals for its member school districts, Mountain BOCES offers one-year Alternative License Programs for Teachers as well as Principals.  These programs allow Mountain BOCES to:
  • Provide alternative pathways for both teacher and principal licensure in the State of Colorado
  • Promote a talent pool to supplement current teaching staff
  • Promote teaching staff who can teach content areas for which recruitment is difficult, such as mathematics and science
  • Develop outstanding professionals who can provide students with an enriching education that includes practical life skills as well as academic objectives
  • Provide equal opportunity for qualified minority applicants
  • Provide licensure to staff working in remote, rural territories
Mountain BOCES has been approved to offer the following teaching endorsement areas:

    Early Childhood Education (Birth - Age 8)  |  Elementary Education (Grades K - 6)

    K-12 Endorsements
    Art  |  Dance  |  Drama  |  World Language(s)  |  Health  |  Instructional Technology (Computers) |  Music
   Physical Education

    Secondary Endorsements (Grades 7-12)
Agriculture and Renewable Resources  |  Business Education  |  Business / Marketing  English
Mathematics  |  Family and Consumer Studies  |  Marketing  |   Science  |  Social Studies  |  Speech
    Technology Education (Industrial Arts)

Costs for the alternative licensure program are as follows:
Those working in Mountain BOCES member school districts:
        Teachers:   $3,700
        Principals:  $5,000
For those working outside of the Mountain BOCES region, add the following amounts to the above costs:
        0 - 100 miles:  $500
        100 - 200 miles:  $750
        More than 200 miles:  $1,000
(Note that the mileage is calculated either from the Mountain BOCES office in Leadville or from Carbondale, whichever is closer to where the candidate works.)

Program Requirements
Currently the application for an Alternative Teacher License requires that the applicant:
  • Has received a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Has not completed an approved educator preparation program with student teaching
  • Has demonstrated content proficiency by having completed the 24 semester hours of content required  for the endorsement as described on the alternative evaluation worksheets and verified by a transcript review or having passed the Colorado State Board of Education-approved content exam for the endorsement being sought
  • Has cleared a background check based upon review of CBI/FBI background check and self-disclosure on the application

Application Process for the Alternative Teacher License
(If you need assistance with this process, contact Joy Yudnich, Regional Licensing Assistance Coordinator for Mountain BOCES, joyy@mtnboces.org or 719.486.2603 x316.)

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) provides an online system for applying for the Statement of Eligibility (which is included in the Alternative Teacher License application) and the Alternative Principal License application.  Use the eLicensing online system at http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeprof/checklist-alt_teacherprincipal.  All applications require online payment in order to be complete and processed.

After Application Approval
Upon approval, the candidate is issued a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) and may then seek employment as an alternative teacher and begin an alternative preparation program once employed.  Candidates must be employed full-time as a teacher and teach a minimum of 51 percent in the approved content area.

Completing the Alternative License Program
Send copies of your Statement of Eligibility and a signed contract from the school district stating your salary to Joy Yudnich, Human Resources, Mountain BOCES.

Once Mountain BOCES has received the SOE, the applicant will need to log back onto the CDE online application for the Alternative License (the second part of the first application). In that application, the applicant will need to download the Statement of Assurance of Employment (SOA) form and have it filled out by the appropriate parties.  Once the applicant and their supervising principal have signed the Statement of Assurance, they must send it to Mountain BOCES for the remaining required signatures.  Once the SOA is completed, the applicant returns to the CDE online application for the Alternative License application for a third time in order to upload the SOE, SOA, and a copy of their contract.

The application process costs $90.
Joy Yudnich will get the proper authorizing signatures and send the applicant the paperwork to upload on the CDE application.  This needs to be done before the applicant starts teaching.  The completed online application for the alternative license needs to be at CDE no later than October 1.

After a few weeks, CDE will send the applicant the Alternative License, which is valid August through May.  The applicant must meet with the Field Supervisor to plan a schedule of 225 hours.

The applicant will be evaluated two times during the school year.  In May, the school principal, mentor teacher, and field supervisor will meet and sign documentation showing that the applicant has completed the 225-hour plan and to recommend the applicant for an initial license.

Once the applicant has completed the program, the field supervisor will sign the verification of completion form and the applicant will apply for the initial Colorado teaching license online at the CDE website, link http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeprof/checklist-initialteacher
